Nanny Raises Money for Research

April 2001     Jennifer Smith has been in childcare for 27 years. She has been a nanny through The Philadelphia Nanny Network, Inc. for the last seven. The quintessential professional nanny, her references have always been glowing. Her resume is a signature of excellence. And the lives of the children for whom she cared, have benefited from her golden touch. Jennifer is now working to touch the life of a child in a different way. In fact, she hopes to touch the lives of many children by her efforts in raising money for research of Leukemia and Lymphoma. The valiant twist is that she will do so by walking a 26.2 mile marathon in San Diego June 3. Jennifer's goal is to raise $3500 and complete the marathon. All money raised will stay in the Delaware Valley and benefit the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Fox Chase Cancer Center, University of Pennsylvania and the Wistar Institute. Part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training Program, of which Jennifer is participating, enables Jennifer to walk the marathon honoring a young child. Her "patient hero" is Sarah Kennedy, diagnosed with Leukemia before her second birthday. Sarah now 5 years old, is in remission. Leukemia is the biggest killer of children under the age of fourteen. Jennifer is trying to help make a difference, offer help, raise money and raise the awareness of the dread of this disease. As an advocate for health and welfare of all children, The Philadelphia Nanny Network, Inc. is proud to support Jennifer in her efforts. As we look at her as a role model of how one individual can make a difference, we think about what we too can do. The Breads of Spring!

Children love bread; eating it and making it. Whether it is hot from the oven or holding together a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, it's a favorite. Learning about different kinds of bread can be fun!

Bread Collage-Art
Use cooking magazines and supermarket circulars for children to and cut out pictures of bread. These pictures can be glued to a piece of construction paper or a paper plate, making a collage. Talk about the different breads, when you eat them and what you eat on them!

Bread Party-Social Studies
Have a bread party! Put out a variety of breads for the children to taste. Use white, wheat, rye, raisin to name a few, Use rolls, bagels, bread sticks too! For older children you can taste the variety and then have them taste one with their eyes closed and guess which type they tried! Talk about the different tastes, shapes and colors!

Bread Grains-Science
Set out containers of grains used to make bread for the children to examine. Let them use a magnifying glass to see it up close and explore the grains. Use wheat, corn, oats and rye. Young children can then glue the grains on paper to make a grain design!

Bakery-Dramatic Play
Prepare an area to assemble a bakery where children can pretend to make bread and baked goods and then sell them. Use aprons, hats, bowls, mixing spoons, pans, rolling pins, muffin tines, measuring spoons and cups, oven mitts, a cash register. Make a poster with pictures and prices!

Favorite Bread Graph-Math
After tasting various types of bread have the children make a group graph. This is fun to do with a playgroup with several children and nannies. Across the top put Our Favorite Breads. Draw or paste pictures of different types of breads along the left side and put the names each person next to their favorite bread. The results of the graph can be discussed using math vocabulary.
